What "Crawled — currently not indexed" actually means

This status in Google Search Console tells you something very specific. Google sent its crawler to your page. The crawler arrived, downloaded the HTML response from your server, read through it, and made a decision: there is nothing here worth adding to the index.

This is not a penalty. Google is not punishing your site. There is no manual action against you. The status is simply Google saying "I visited this page and found nothing to index." It is a statement of fact about what your server returned.

The important distinction is between "crawled" and "discovered." If your page shows "Discovered — currently not indexed," Google knows the URL exists but has not visited it yet. With "Crawled — currently not indexed," Google already visited. It already looked at your HTML. And it decided there was no meaningful content to store.

For most websites, this status appears on duplicate pages, thin content, or low-value URLs. But if you are seeing it on your main pages — your homepage, your service pages, your important landing pages — something is fundamentally wrong with what your server is sending to Google.

Why AI-built sites get this status

AI website builders like Base44, Lovable, and Bolt create React single-page applications. When someone visits your site in a browser, JavaScript downloads, executes, and renders your content on screen. The page looks great. Everything works.

But here is what actually lives on your server: an HTML file containing almost nothing. The entire body of the page is a single empty element — typically <div id="root"></div> — followed by a reference to a JavaScript bundle. That is the complete HTML response your server sends to every visitor, including Google.

When Google's crawler requests your page, it receives that empty shell. There are no headings. No paragraphs. No product descriptions. No service details. There is literally nothing for Google to index. The crawler does exactly what you would expect: it marks the page as crawled, confirms there is no indexable content, and moves on.

The "Crawled — currently not indexed" status is technically accurate. Google crawled your page and found an empty <div>. There is nothing to index because there is nothing there. The status is not a bug or a delay. It is the correct response to an empty HTML page.

How to check what Google sees on your page

Before trying to fix anything, confirm the problem. There are three quick ways to see exactly what Google sees when it visits your site.

Option 1: Google Search Console. Go to the URL Inspection tool, enter your page URL, and click "View Crawled Page." This shows you the exact HTML that Google received. If you see an empty page or just a loading spinner, your content is not in the HTML response.

Option 2: View source in your browser. Type view-source: directly before your URL in the browser address bar (for example, view-source:https://yoursite.com). This shows the raw HTML your server sends before any JavaScript runs. If you cannot find your actual page content in that source code, neither can Google.

Option 3: Search for your site on Google. Type site:yourdomain.com into Google search. If your pages do not appear, or if they appear with generic titles and no descriptions, Google has not been able to read your content.

Three things that will not fix this

When people see "Crawled — currently not indexed" in Search Console, the first instinct is to try the obvious solutions. Here is why the common fixes do not work for AI-built sites.

Resubmitting the URL for indexing

The "Request Indexing" button in Search Console tells Google to come back and crawl your page again. But Google already crawled it — that is what the status is telling you. The problem is not that Google has not visited. The problem is what Google found when it got there. Requesting another crawl sends Google back to the same empty HTML page. You will get the same result.

Adding SEO settings inside the AI builder

Some AI builders let you set page titles, meta descriptions, or keywords within their interface. These settings are applied by JavaScript after the page loads in a browser. They are not present in the HTML response your server sends. Google never sees them. Configuring SEO settings inside a client-side rendered app is like writing instructions on the inside of a sealed envelope — the recipient cannot read them without opening it first.

Waiting for Google to re-crawl

Some advice suggests simply waiting. Google will come back, they say, and eventually it will render the JavaScript and index your content. In practice, this does not happen for React SPAs built with AI tools. Google re-crawls the page, receives the same empty HTML, and reaches the same conclusion. Waiting does not change what your server returns. You can wait six months and the result will be identical.

What actually fixes it

The fix is straightforward once you understand the problem. Google cannot index your content because your content is not in the HTML. The solution is to put your content in the HTML.

This means converting your site from a client-side rendered React app to static HTML files. Instead of sending an empty shell with a JavaScript bundle, your server sends complete HTML pages with all your content already in them. Every heading, every paragraph, every image, every link — all present in the HTML response on the first request.

Convert to static HTML (SSG)

When your server responds with real HTML content, Google indexes it. Every page needs its own unique title tag, meta description, and heading structure. The content must be in the source code, not injected by JavaScript. Static HTML generation gives you full SEO visibility with zero server complexity.

After conversion, each page on your site becomes a standalone .html file. Google requests the page, receives complete content, and has everything it needs to index and rank you. The "Crawled — currently not indexed" status resolves because there is now actual content for Google to index.

You also need to ensure that each page has unique, descriptive meta tags. AI builders typically use the same generic title and description for every URL. After conversion, every page should have a title tag that accurately describes that specific page, a meta description written for humans, and a logical heading hierarchy starting with a single H1.

Timeline: how long until pages get indexed after fixing

Once your site is converted to static HTML, pages typically begin appearing in Google search results within days to a few weeks. This is not a guarantee — Google indexes on its own schedule — but the difference is dramatic compared to waiting indefinitely with a client-side rendered app.

After submission, monitor the Index Coverage report in Search Console. Pages that previously showed "Crawled — currently not indexed" should begin transitioning to "Indexed" as Google re-crawls them and finds real content in the HTML response. If any pages remain stuck, check the crawled page view to confirm the HTML conversion is working correctly for those specific URLs.
